Lahore, July 23 2013 (PPI-OT): Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that there is a vast scope of generation of energy from bagasse in the province and the government is formulating a comprehensive policy in this regard.
He said that there are 46 sugar mills in Punjab and power can be generated from bagasse which is not only an economical source of generation of electricity but precious foreign exchange of billions of rupees used on the purchase of furnace oil could also be saved by producing energy from alternative resources. He said that the government is trying to generate electricity from alternative and renewable resources for overcoming energy crisis.
These views were expressed by him while talking to a delegation of prominent engineering company associated with power generation Avant Grade Engineers at Model Town, today. Provincial Energy Minister Sher Ali Khan, Minister for Agriculture Farrukh Javed, Special Assistant Arshad Jutt, Chairman NEPRA, Chairman Planning and Development and concerned provincial secretaries were also present. Director Avant Grade Engineering Bala Supramanium gave a briefing on the projects of generation of power from bagasse, coal as well as biomass.
Addressing the meeting, the Chief Minister said that Pakistan is facing the worst energy crisis which has not only affected common man but also left a negative impact on economic and trade activities. He said that electricity is essential for economy and trade, therefore, government is attaching top priority to overcoming energy crisis and is taking steps on war footing for this purpose. He said that agreements were signed with Chinese companies and leadership during the visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to China for cooperation in this sector while steps are being taken expeditiously for power generation from alternative resources.
He said that up-gradation of boilers in sugar mills could result in generation of more energy. He said that several countries of the world are generating power from bagasse, which is a cheap source of power generation.
The Chief Minister directed concerned authorities to prepare a financial model for power generation from bagasse and the concerned departments should present such a roadmap with the consultation of the experts of Avant Grade Engineering for power generation through bagasse which could be speedily implemented.
He said that the goal of producing electricity from bagasse can be realized by upgrading the technology of sugar mills and experts should chalk out a plan for this purpose so that progress could be made in this direction without any delay.
Later, Chris Holmes of Global LNG Market Outlook, Julian Nambert, Regional Director Middle East and Stephene Canpron, Head of LNG also met with the Chief Minister Punjab and gave a briefing regarding increasing demand of LNG and its importance.
