Complete shutdown observed in IHK

Srinagar, December 31, 2012 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown was observed, today, to protest against the indiscriminate firing of Indian troops on peaceful civilians in Pulwama. Call for the shutdown had been given by the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and the veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani to express solidarity with the victims.

Shops and business establishments remained closed while traffic was off the road. Working in the courts was affected as the lawyers boycotted the court proceedings. Meanwhile, the occupation authorities continued to impose curfew in Pulwama town for the fourth consecutive day, today, to prevent people from holding anti-India demonstrations. At least fifteen people were injured when Indian troops had opened indiscriminate fire on peaceful civilians in Pulwama on Friday.

The Indian police arrested, today, the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik, and other party leaders including Noor Muhammad Kalwal in Pampore when they were on their way to Pulwama to express solidarity with the families of the two youth, who were recently martyred by the troops.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a media interview in Srinagar denouncing the imposition of curfew in Pulwama said that the people were facing hardships due to restrictions on their movement. Syed Ali Gilani, in a statement issued in Srinagar demanded an impartial investigation into the indiscriminate firing of the troops on civilians to bring the perpetrators to justice.

APHC leader, Mukhtar Ahmed Waza, in his statement denouncing the troops’ action in Pulwama deplored that India had given its forces a free hand to kill innocent people to suppress the ongoing liberation movement in the territory. Another APHC leader, Mohammad Yousuf Naqash, in a statement in Srinagar said that Kashmir was an internationally recognised dispute under the UN resolutions.
