Islamabad: Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim attended G-20 (coordinated by Brazil), G-33(coordinated by Indonesia) and Cairns (coordinated by Australia) ministerial meetings on the margins of 8th WTO Ministerial Conference.
Pakistan is part of these three informal coalitions dealing with agriculture negotiations to protect its offensive and defensive interests. Senior Commerce Minister of Pakistan expressed deep concern on the lack of progress in Doha Round and urged all members to refrain from protectionism.
He also emphasized that distortions in the agriculture sector affect the poor and small farmers most therefore we are looking for an early removal of trade distortions from the agriculture sector, especially cotton.
He further stressed that the issues relating to agriculture can only be addressed multilaterally therefore Doha Development Round is the only solution for substantial outcome in the agriculture sector. Other ministers also emphasized the importance of continuing the agriculture trade policy reform process, many developing countries ministers raised concern on the use of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures as a tool for protectionism.
