Karachi: District Coordination Officer Karachi Roshan Ali Shaikh has said that city government Karachi was formulating short and long term policy for disposal of solid waste under scientific method. Cost saving and productive methods like mechanized sweeping, incineration and production of electricity and composting would be used in disposal of garbage.
In the first phase, four garbage transfer stations (GST) would be set up at Malir Bund, Sharafi Goth, Mewashah and Safoora Goth with the installation of community dust bins at various places in the city. Action under section 144 will be taken on burning of garbage in city or dumping it on illegally.
Help from civil society and consultants will be sought in this connection. Other municipal service providers would be bound to shift their garbage on landfill sites. Any official involved in burning garbage at landfill site will have to face action against him.
He expressed these views while addressing a meeting in Civic Center on Saturday which was called to formulate a comprehensive policy on solid waste management.
The meeting was attended by EDO Municipal Services Dr. Shoukat Zaman, all town administrators, District Officer Solid Waste Management Khalid Javed, District Officer Machinery Pool, District Officer Landfill Sites and other officers.
DCO Karachi said solid waste management had been a main problem of the city and therefore this should be solved at the local level by adopting a short and long term policy in the first and second phase of its implementation.
He also directed to establish a recycling unit alongside GSTs and to take measures for safe shifting of garbage and waste to landfill sites while the installation of community dust bins could be sponsored through a private firm.
