Islamabad: Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, head of PML-Q, and Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, Senior Minister, called on Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani here at the Prime Minister’s House and exchanged views on the current political situation in the country.
Leadership of both coalition partners expressed their unwavering commitment to continue their cooperation and utmost endeavours to strengthen democracy in the country.
They also reiterated their resolve to mobilize the public opinion through their respective platforms aimed at standing up against those who were contemplating to thwart the continuity of the democratic evolution in the country.
Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, PML-Q chief, said that his party would continue to cooperate with Pakistan People’s Party to strengthen democratic process in the country and commitment in this regard would go much beyond.
The Prime Minister thanked PML-Q Chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, Sheikh Waqas Akram, and Ahmad Yar Hiraj for their continuous support to the government, adding that the cooperation vindicated the policy of reconciliation given by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto as the best way to steer the country out of the present crises facing the country.
The Prime Minister said that it was heartening that the political leadership, civil society and media had criticized the idea of re-introduction of military courts as the only option to control heinous crime.
Military courts are alien in a democracy and where an independent judiciary is working within the ambit of Constitution, the Prime Minister maintained.
Pakistan, under democracy, is a civilized country and talk of military courts by an important leader is both regrettable, and as such was unacceptable to the people of Pakistan, the Prime Minister said.
