Cases for transfer of Pakistani Prisoners being actively processed: Jamil Ahmed Khan

Islamabad, December 10, 2012 (PPI-OT): Prisoners’ rights fall under the ambit of the UN Charters and its human rights covenants, as such the Agreement on Transfer of Sentenced Persons and its ratification by the Pakistani and UAE governments is a demonstration of human value and human rights accorded by the leadership of both the countries, says a press release received here today from UAE.

This was stated by the Ambassador of Pakistan to UAE, Jamil Ahmed Khan, while talking to the relatives of Pakistani prisoners over telephone who showed eagerness for the early return of their loved ones to prisons in Pakistan where the family and friends would be able to visit them during the remaining period of their conviction. Ambassador Jamil expressed his gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan and the UAE leadership who have shown magnanimity towards the prisoners on humanitarian grounds.

The Ambassador further illustrated to the relatives of the Pakistani prisoners in the UAE that the Embassy has fully geared up to process cases of transfer of prisoners with the aim to be able to send the first batch in the month of January 2013 if the lists along with categories of prisoners are provided by the UAE Justice department at an early date.

He further noted that travel formalities of documentation such as certification of nationalities and execution of sentences in Pakistan will be verified towards the equivalence of criminal liabilities in terms of execution of the sentences.

Ambassador also underscored that the Embassy of Pakistan would be in a position to bear the cost of the travel as and when required. Communication to this extent has already been sent by Pakistani Mission to the Ministry of Interior, Government of Pakistan.

While responding to queries, Ambassador Jamil stated that prisoners of all categories are covered under the terms of agreement except those who are involved in impacting the sovereignty; those convicted under the military law and those who have financial obligation under judicial orders.
