Karachi, November 22, 2013 (PPI-OT): Business leaders, academics, and government officials gathered to discuss how to build Pakistan’s entrepreneurship ecosystem during an afternoon conference in Karachi on Friday.
The National Entrepreneurship Working Group (NEW-G), co-sponsored by the U.S. Consulate in Karachi, Intel Pakistan and Injaz Pakistan hosted the conference held during Global Entrepreneurship Week, an international initiative celebrating different types of business ventures. The Karachi conference included remarks by U.S. Consul General Michael Dodman and NEW-G leadership, as well as discussion panels that addressed subjects related to building Pakistan’s culture of entrepreneurship.
Addressing the participants, Consul General Dodman said, “Entrepreneurism, particularly the creation of new small and medium size businesses, is the driver of economic growth. We have seen the benefits of entrepreneurship in the United States, and are pleased to be able to partner with groups like NEW-G and others who are working to promote entrepreneurship in Pakistan.”
S. Rizwan Razvi, NEW-G President, told the over 100 business and civil society leaders in attendance, “One of the goals of today’s seminar is to engage all stakeholders in designing strategies for the promotion of entrepreneurship in Pakistan.”
Pakistan’s early-stage entrepreneurship ecosystem owes its existence to the efforts of a small but active network of social-sector organizations and academia, and initiatives such as business plan competitions. However, according to experts, the integration of entrepreneurship and innovation with Pakistan’s economic growth strategies will require a national platform and coordination.
NEW-G, a non-profit entity supported by the U.S. Consulate in Karachi as an umbrella organization of entrepreneurship and innovation support entities in Pakistan, aims to create a platform at the national level to bring about a change in the economic development of Pakistan. Friday’s conference marked the first of many planned NEW-G events to promote entrepreneurship on a national scale.
