Brussels to host G5 Sahel International Conference today

Brussels The International High-Level Conference on security in G5 Sahel region will kick off Friday in Brussels, Belgium, with the aim of completing the operating budget of the joint force of the sub-regional institution.

Heads of state from the G5 Sahel countries including Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger are attending the meeting alongside bilateral and multilateral partners from Belgium � which hosts the meeting � France, Canada, the European Union (EU), the African Union (AU), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations.

The initial budget of the G5 Sahel Joint Force is estimated at Euros 423 million. Partners such as France, Saudi Arabia, the United States and the EU have already announced their contributions which will be added to the Euros 10 million, expected from each of the five member countries.

To date, the amounts disbursed and pledged reached a total of Euros 294 million. Friday’s meeting will fill the gap in order to reach the estimated budget of Euros 423 million, according to Agence de Presse Africaine (APA).

The G5 Sahel Joint Force, which will ultimately have 5,000-member force, is aimed at combating terrorism and trafficking of all kinds in the Sahel region of West Africa.
