British High Commissioner calls on Prime Minister

Islamabad, March 11, 2014 (PPI-OT): The British High Commissioner H.E. Mr. Philip Barton called on the Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif at PM house.

Prime Minister congratulated him on his new assignment in Pakistan and expressed hope that bilateral relations between Pakistan and Britain will further be strengthened during his tenure.

The Prime Minister said that Pakistan considers UK a close friend and a genuine development partner. PM added that current bilateral trade between the two countries which stands at £1.9 billion (around US$ 2.99 billion) in 2012-13, would increase manifolds in the coming year. PM expressed his desire that we can achieve the target of £3 billion, set by British Prime Minister Cameron, for our bilateral trade by 2015.

He appreciated UK’s role in galvanizing support for inclusion in the GSP plus Scheme. PM told that Pakistan is following investor friendly policies and expressed his confidence that British investment in Pakistan would increase in the near future.

PM said we need to work hand in hand to increase the existing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as there is scope for expansion in the fields of energy, infrastructure development, agriculture and agro-based industry and mining.

PM at this occasion also eulogized the services of his predecessor Hon’ble Adam Thomson. The new British High Commissioner thanked the Prime Minister for giving him time for presenting his credentials. He expressed confidence that during his tenure Pak-Britain relations will get further boost. Mr. Tariq Fatmi Special Assistant to PM was also present at the occasion.
