Islamabad: Aziz Ahmad Bilour, Federal Secretary Ministry of Industries held a meeting with the representatives of United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Dr. Jeff Riedman, a scholar from University of Brighton UK and an expert in international value chain.

Mr. Bilour emphasized the need to establish creative and innovative industry in the country to cope with the requirements of a wide variety of customers across the globe. This, he said, is only possible if the public sector, private sector and academia work in collaboration to benefit from each other’s experience and make the academic research more industrial oriented.

He was of the view that though the industry in Pakistan need to upgrade its production methods but more importantly, it has to focus on the designing and marketing of the product. Mr. Bilour said that Pakistan has a very rich culture and industry in Pakistan has to “brand” the indigenous and unique products that Pakistan designs to get recognition in the international market.

The representatives of UNIDO informed the Ministry about the endeavours of their organization in building indigenous (human and/or institutional) capacity to enhance the industrialization process in Pakistan in a sustainable way.

They said that in UK universities are entrepreneurship hub with their “Business Facing Vision” and extensive collaboration with the local industry. Stressing upon the need to enhance this mutual cooperation in Pakistan they emphasized the need to re-activate and re-invigorate Office for Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) in the universities.

ORICs were established by HEC in the universities to create a liaison between academic research and industry and to convert that research into fruitful growth. They said that UNIDO is also conceptualizing the idea to set up Industrial Modernizing Center in Pakistan to bring Pakistani Industry at par with the international standards.

The Ministry also put forward the idea to link the Home Economics Colleges with the industry to translate the research conducted by the women into productive development. Furthermore, it was proposed that UNIDO must look into the development and up gradation of testing labs in Pakistan which can provide certification which is acknowledged world wide.
