Bilateral relationship between Pakistan and United States moving on an upwards trajectory: Jalil Abbas Jilani

Islamabad, December 09, 2015 (PPI-OT): Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani delivered a keynote speech this evening at an event hosted by the World Affairs Council, Washington DC. The event was part of the Ambassador Series program the World Affairs Council has convened over the last few years. The occasion, featuring the Ambassador of Pakistan, was attended by a wide section of over 100 participants representing the academia, think tank community, US government officials and members of the corporate sector, says a press release received heretoday from Washington DC.

Ambassador Jilani spoke about Pakistan-US relations, regional security challenges and educational advancement in Pakistan. Highlighting the recent high level engagements from both sides including the visit of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif to Washington DC in October, Ambassador Jilani informed the audience that the bilateral relationship was moving on an upwards trajectory. The two countries were expanding cooperation in all vital areas ranging from defense, counter-terrorism and non-proliferation to energy, economy and trade as well as education, science and technology.

Ambassador Jilani also talked about the emerging challenges and Pakistan’s contribution to bringing peace and stability in the region. Ambassador shared that comprehensive counter-terrorism operations were instrumental in eliminating the terrorist networks operating from the region. He expressed hope that the renewed contacts between the leadership of Pakistan and India would help reduce tension and revive dialogue process for the resolution of all outstanding issues.

Sharing details of Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace and connectivity in the region, Ambassador Jilani informed about the Heart of Asia Ministerial Conference being co-hosted by the leaders of Afghanistan and Pakistan in Islamabad. He hoped that the outcome of the Ministerial Conference and Islamabad declaration would contribute to bringing economic prosperity and mutually beneficial cooperation in the region.

An interactive QandA session following the address afforded the participants the opportunity to seek Ambassador’s perspective on specific issues in Pakistan-US bilateral relations.
