Benazir Income Support Programme: Senate body meeting held in Chief Secretary Office Sindh

Karachi, March 26, 2013 (PPI-OT): Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat and Capital Administration and Development meeting was held in the Conference Room of Chief Secretary office, SINDH on Tuesday 26.03.2013 on Benazir Income Support Programme Assistance being provided to the people of Sindh.

The meeting was chaired by Senator Kalsoom Parveen of the Standing Committee and attended by Senator Abdul Haseeb Khan, Senator Saeeda Iqbal , Mr Sher Khan, Secretary BISP, Mr Zafarullah Soomro , DG BISP SINDH , MD STEVTA and other officers of BISP.

The Committee was briefed on the Benazir Income Support Programme initiatives in Sindh by Mr Sher Khan , Secretary Benazir Income Support Programme and Mr Zafarullah Soomro, Director General Benazir Income Support Programme Sindh.

Mr. Sher Khan , Secretary BISP said that more than 4.8 million families are receiving the monthly cash grant of Rs. 1000, Mr Sher Khan, Secretary BISP informed the visiting delegation that, apart from the cash grant,BISP’s other initiatives include Vocational and Technical training – Waseela-e- Rozgar,Interest-Free Returnable Financial Assistance – Waseela-e-Haq, Health and Life Insurance – Waseela-e-Sehet – Primary Education (Conditional Cash Transfer) – Waseela-e-Taleem and Emergency Relief – Hangami Maali Imdad.

Mr Zafarullah Khan Soomro, Director General BISP Sindh during the brief informed that 1.5 million beneficiaries were receiving cash grants in sindh.

Madame Kalsoom Parveen , Senator and Chairperson of the Standing Committee advised that forward linkages for BISP Trained Beneficiaries may be made in cooperation with Overseas Employment Corporation for placement of skilled labour abroad and stressed for further Improvement of the Programme.

Mr Sher Khan, Secretary BISP also said that many countries in the world are now moving towards providing targeted subsidies and that Pakistan’s progress in this area through BISP has been accredited by many global financial institution and foreign countries. BISP is now working on developing partnerships with the private sector and has already developed a comprehensive strategy in this regard.
