Attempts to weaken democracy to be thwarted: Prime Minister

Islamabad, November 15, 2012 (PPI-OT): Parliamentarians belonging to Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Balochistan called on Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf separately at his Parliament House Chamber this afternoon and discussed the current situation as well as matters relating to the ongoing development schemes and issues pertaining to their respective constituencies.

Talking to the Parliamentarians, the Prime Minister said that the democratic government is about to complete its term and will hold general elections in the country. He warned that attempts by anti state elements who are trying their best to weaken the democratic agenda will be thwarted.

The Prime Minister said that the present government has initiated numerous development projects across the country, especially in the far-flung and remote areas to provide basic amenities of life to the people. Provision of amenities will improve their standard of living, he added.

The Prime Minister urged the Parliamentarians to adopt a proactive approach and remain in contact with workers as well as general public so that they can sensitize them about the government’s development agenda. He also urged them to oversee and ensure timely completion of development projects in their respective constituencies to ensure maximum impact of these projects.

The Prime Minister said that government’s flagship programme, Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has acquired international recognition as a success story. He said that government has already given go ahead to the BISP to expand its operations in other fields and target poverty so that poorest of the poor can be provided relief. He said that poverty survey has been yet another marked distinction of the government which has been helpful in guiding the government’s development agenda.

The Prime Minister said that despite the difficult economic situation internationally, an economic policy aimed at containing inflation and encouraging growth has been pursued by the government. He said that the government was targeting vital areas like energy security, food security and social security of the masses.
