Karachi, June 04, 2013 (PPI-OT): Asian Development Bank mission visited KW and SB to discuss Karachi Water and Sewerage Board Water Supply and Sewerage Projects and Projects in Social Sector. The ADB Mission Comprising of Peter N. Freeman, Consulting Transport Avilater (USA) Tomoo Veda Principal Elevation Specialist ADB, Lucillec Ocenar Elevation officers ADB, Ansar Ali Consultant meet Managing Director Karachi Water and Sewerage Board.
Deputy Managing Director KW and SB Mashkoor ul Hasnain, Deputy Managing Director KW and SB Iftikhar Ahmed Khan, Project Director S-III Chief Engineers Zafar Palejo and Asad ullah Khan, Principal Staff Officer Khurram Shehzad and other concerned officers were also present on this occasion. Mission took deep interest in KW and SB Social Sector Development Projects. ADB Mission is visiting Pakistan to inspect projects under progress with KW and SB funding and consider new projects for funding.
M.D KW and SB briefing the mission said that Karachi is the only metropolis in the world where water sources are located 200 Kilometre away. KW and SB is bringing this water from these sources to provide more than 20 million citizens of Karachi. KW and SB is currently working under Government of Sindh and facing shortage of 400 million gallon shortfall.
He said that Greater Karachi Water Supply Project K-IV has been formulated with a cost of 26 billion rupees to ensure that KW and SB is self sufficient in water supply for next 20 years with 1200 cusec additional supply.
Furthermore, K-III project was completed in 2006, after which no project has been completed so far. He said that water is a basic necessity whereas sewerage is also a basic commodity therefore special attention must be given to these issues.
He said that Greater Karachi Sewage Project S-III costing 13 billion rupees is also of vital nature for the citizens and the industrial and coastal metropolis since the industrial waste and sewerage water is currently disposed in the sea without any treatment of filtration increasing the marine pollution endangering the marine life as well.
MD KW and SB briefed that these projects are of national important in dire need of completion not only to improve the quality of life in Karachi but through the country. Government of Sindh has approved 11 thousand acres of free land for these two projects whereas both these projects are not only approved by Provincial Government, Federal Government and ECNEC but the PC-I of the project has already been sent. Development on these projects has already begun.
He thanked ADB mission for taking interest in investing these projects. He said that with the completion of this project we would not only over come water shortfall but marine pollution and secure marine life.
Chief of the Mission expressed his satisfaction on the briefing and project plans. He said that he would forward the details of these projects to Asian Development Bank; moreover they also took interest in other social sector projects. He said that ADB looks forward to a developed Pakistan, which is why ADB is interested in Pakistani development projects.
He said that KW and SB is a strategically important institution of the country and water and sewerage industry is certainly in dire need of mega projects. He said that ADB would review the project details and mission would present its comments along with the report for further consideration. They expressed their intentions to establish a continued friendship with Karachi Water and Sewerage Board.
