APHC flays Antony for his remarks on Pathribal case

Srinagar, February 18, 2014 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the All Parties Hurriyet Conference has taken strong exception to the recent statement of Indian Defence Minister, A K Antony, wherein he had refused to reopen the case against the army personnel involved in Pathribal fake encounter.

The APHC at a meeting of its Executive Council chaired by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in Srinagar, today, said that Antony’s assertion had exposed India’s claims of democracy and justice. It said that Pathribal was not the first incident of its kind but Indian troops and police personnel had committed gross human rights abuses including custodial killings, extra-judicial executions and molestation of women during the past twenty-five years.

It said that Indian forces were committing these war crimes under a pre-planned policy aimed at suppressing the Kashmiris’ just struggle for securing their right to self-determination.

The meeting deplored that whether it was execution of Muhammad Afzal Guru or Kunanposhpora mass rape, justice was not provided to the victims and their families. It said that these gory incidents could not break the will of the Kashmiri people who were determined to continue their liberation struggle.

It was decided in the meeting that in order to pay tributes to the struggle of Kashmiri women in the ongoing liberation movement 23rd February would be marked as Kashmiri Women’s Resistance Day every year from now onwards. Around one hundred women were raped by Indian troops in Kunanposhpora during the intervening night of February 23 and 24 in 1991.

The APHC appealed to the international community, the UN Human Rights Council and other rights bodies to take cognizance of the Indian brutalities against the innocent people of the occupied territory. The meeting was attended by Professor Abdul Ghani Butt, Maulana Abbas Ansari, Bilal Ghani Lone, Muhammad Musaddiq Aadil and Mukhtar Ahmed Waza.
