Srinagar, March 20, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the students of Kashmir University and other colleges in the Kashmir valley staged protest demonstrations against the hanging of Mohammad Afzal Guru and in support of the demand for return of mortal remains of Kashmiri leaders, Mohammad Maqbool Butt and Mohammad Afzal Gur to their families.
Supporting the call given by Muttahida Majlis-e-Mushawarat (MMM), students of Kashmir University came out of their respective departments and started a procession from the Law Department.
Besides carrying portraits of Mohammad Afzal Guru, the students also carried placards that read “We are all Afzals,” “Aazadi-we shall get it, Insha Allah,” “I’m Afzal, hang me,” and “Kill all Kashmiris to satisfy India.”
The students, while marching through various departments tried to move out from the university complex but the heavy contingent of police intercepted and was not allowed to come out of the university main gate.
The students then staged a sit-in protest there. Several student leaders addressed the protesters. . “It is our basic right to protest and we are protesting for the return of the mortal remains of Maqbool Butt and Afzal Guru,” said a protesting student.
The veteran Kashmiri Hurriyat leader, Syed Ali Gilani addressing the students over phone said the ongoing freedom movement belongs to the youth, as they were the ambassadors of the cause. He asked the students to remain steadfast and take the movement to its logical end.
“This movement is yours. You have to safeguard the sacrifices rendered by our youth. You have to take the freedom struggle to its logical conclusion,” Gilani told the students as pro-freedom and pro-Gilani slogans reverberated in the campus.
Meanwhile, pro-freedom rallies were also taken out by students in many districts and major towns of the Valley including Pulwama, Islamabad, Kupwara, Bandipora, Shopian, Kulgam and Baramulla.
