Islamabad, March 19, 2014 (PPI-OT): The Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage fully realizes that journalists and media workers are an asset for the country who are selflessly working for promotion of national causes. The Ministry is committed to fulfilling all the genuine demands of PFUJ and APNEC and as per the directions of Minister for IB and NH, Senator Pervaiz Rashid all issues for security and welfare of journalists /media workers are being handled expeditiously with full conviction.
The Prime Minister is also taking personal interest in ensuring all measure for the welfare and protection of the journalists and has announced to constitute a commission comprising media persons, public figures and government representatives which will propose measures to be adopted by the government to protect journalists in the field and ensure their well being. This commission will also suggest ways and means to effectively monitor prosecution of crimes against journalists.
The Ministry is expeditiously working for provision of Life Insurance for Journalists/Media Workers to give them assurance for the financial security of their families. An all-inclusive mechanism for provision of Life Insurance Policy for Journalists /media workers is being worked out and a Special Cell is being set up in PID which will facilitate the Journalists/media workers for getting Life insurance.
It has been principally agreed that government would provide compensation to all martyrs, injured and disabled Journalists /media workers. For the families of the Martyred journalist, there would be a compensation of Rs 10, 00, 000 each while for the injured and disabled, the compensation amount would be Rs 300, 000 each
Federal Government would provide compensation for the cases falling under Federal Government Jurisdiction including Federal Capital Territory and Fata whereas, respective Provincial governments would pay compensation in their respective jurisdiction.
In addition, Ministry would ensure provision of security to all media houses and press clubs without any discrimination and the Committee for Media Security is working to finalize a Media security plan in consultation with the Ministry of Interior and Media representatives’ bodies.
Ministry is cautious of its responsibilities regarding the killing of journalists in terror incidents and agrees that like the case of Wali Khan Babur, these cases have to be heard by the Anti terror courts for quick decisions. Ministry of Law, Justice and Human Rights have been requested for Referral of cases of journalist killings to anti terrorism courts and Ministry of interior have been asked for provision of special prosecutors for handling of these cases.
Ministry after the approval of the competent authority has forwarded summaries for the 8th Wages Board Award and appointment of Chairman ITNE to Prime Minister for approval.
