AFSPA against democracy and constitution: Wajahat

Srinagar, January 28, 2013 (PPI-OT): Indian National Commission on Minorities Chairman Wajahat Habibullah has said that the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is against democracy and Constitution and called for removing its loopholes after discussions with the Army if cannot be withdrawn from Kashmir and north-eastern states of India.

Wajahat Habibullah commenting on the Justice Verma Committee recommendations about amendments to AFSPA said, “Such a law should not exist in any democratic set-up.”

Human Rights organisations are against the Act, as they claim that officers committing human rights violations get away with their crime due to the Act.

On the other hand, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Patron, Mufti Muhammad Sayeed addressing a public meeting at Phinder village at RS Pura in Jammu welcomed the recommendations of Justice J S Verma about securing the dignity of women in conflict areas.
