7th Round of Pakistan-Japan Annual Political consultations held in Tokyo

Islamabad, November 26, 2012 (PPI-OT): The 7th round of Pakistan-Japan Annual Political Consultations was held in Tokyo on 26th November 2012. Pakistan side was led by Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani, the Japanese side was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki, says a press release received here today from Tokyo.

During the Consultations, the two sides reviewed bilateral relations in political, economic, defence, cultural, educational and agriculture fields. At present there are 33 ongoing socio-economic developmental projects undertaken by Japan in Pakistan.

Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani thanked the Japanese side for its role in socio-economic development of Pakistan during last six decades. He updated the Japanese side on latest developments in Pakistan’s relations with U.S.A, India, Afghanistan and Iran. He also shared Pakistan’s perspective on the situation in the Middle East.

He briefed the Japanese side about different initiatives taken by the present government in health, education, electoral reforms as well as constitutional amendments. He also highlighted Pakistan’s efforts and sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.

In response, Deputy Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki deeply appreciated Pakistan government’s and Japan based Pakistani community’s contributions in the aftermath of Great East Japan Earthquake on 11th March 2011.

He noted that Japan deeply values Pakistan’s strong role and commitment in eliminating terrorism, despite a number of the challenges faced in terms of loss of life and to economy. He also shared Japanese perspective on geo-political developments in Asia Pacific region, with particular reference to Japan’s relations with the U.S. and China.

Annual Political Consultation mechanism was established in 2004. Last round of consultation was held in Islamabad in June 2011. The next round will be held in Islamabad during 2013.
