6 cities to get Waste to Energy Projects within one year: Senior Minister Punjab

Lahore, January 21, 2019 (PPI-OT): Senior Minister Punjab Abdul Aleem Khan has directed to immediately start Waste to Energy Projects in 6 big cities of Punjab and complete them within one year. These cities include Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Sialkot while Islamabad will be added specially with Rawalpindi and Punjab Government will also gift one project to KPK Government for Peshawar. While presiding over a high level meeting, Senior Minister Abdul Aleem Khan asked the Local Government Department to take initiative in this regard and further proceed to establish such plants with the cooperation of Chinese and other foreign companies.

He added that these plants will replace dumping sites where garbage will produce electricity, gases and other usable products and these Waste to Energy Projects will be part of Clean and Green Punjab campaign for which long term planning has been evolved. Senior Minister indicated that after these 6 cities other urban units will also be included in this project and Waste to Energy Projects will be carry forwarded to each district of Punjab. He said that these projects are also aimed at ensuring healthy environment for the citizens and avoid damage to the soil.

Abdul Aleem Khan said that dumping was also resulting in to unhygienic vegetables and crops while livestock was also being affected. Senior Minister pointed out that the past government did not pay proper attention towards waste management and long term and concrete policies were not formed. He added that self-styled policies and companies with ill planning could not manage the real issues of cleanliness and added to the problems of the masses.

Abdul Aleem Khan assured that in the light of the directions of the Prime Minister, steps are being taken in the right direction and Chief Minister Punjab approved a number of policies for the Local Government and Community Development Department and practical work has been started in Waste to Energy Project. He said that in the first phase 6 cities have been chosen and practical work would be starting soon. Senior Minister Abdul Aleem Khan was also given briefing in this high level meeting by the Secretary Local Govt. Capt.(r) Saif Anjum and told that Waste to Energy Project would be processed keeping in view the past experiences. A number of proposals were also come under discussion in the meeting decisions were taken, accordingly.
