5th Round of Pakistan – Japan Security Dialogue (Politico-Military Dialogue) held

Islamabad, August 16, 2016 (PPI-OT):The fifth Round of Pakistan – Japan Security Dialogue (Politico-Military Dialogue) was held in Islamabad on August 16, 2016. Pakistan delegation was led by Syed Zulfiqar Gardezi, Additional Foreign Secretary (Asia Pacific). The Japanese side was headed by Ambassador Kazuya Nashida, Director General Southeast and Southwest Asian Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

The two sides discussed a wide range of bilateral, regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest. The cordial Pakistan Japan ties and the potential for greater economic cooperation was highlighted. During the exchange of views on regional situation, the Additional Foreign Secretary briefed the Japanese delegation on Pakistan’s peaceful neighbourhood policy including Afghanistan, India and the adverse human rights situation in Indian occupied Kashmir. Views were also exchanged on Pakistan’s efforts against terrorism and contribution to UN peace keeping operations.

Later Ambassador Nashida accompanied by Mr. Takashi Kurai, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, called on the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Mr. Sartaj Aziz. Following the talks at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Japanese delegation held the second segment of the dialogue relating to Military-to-Military talks at the Ministry of Defence today. The Politico-Military Dialogue between Pakistan and Japan is an important forum for exchange of views on a broad range of issues of mutual interest. The next round of these talks is likely to be held in Japan.
