Twelve Afghan soldiers were killed and four others wounded in a violent attack by Taliban insurgents at Ai Khanem border crossing in the northeast province of Takhar adjoining Tajikistan, late on Sunday, the fourth in a series of attacks targeting the same point.
“Twelve members of the security forces were killed there, but heavy losses were inflicted upon the armed opposition,” said Provincial Governor’s Spokesman Jawad Hijri.
He explained that the soldiers engaged the gunmen in a fierce battle that lasted three hours, adding that the authorities sent reinforcements to the area enabling the troops to take control of the situation.
The construction of the border facility at Ai Khanem, which was funded by the government of Japan, is part of an Afghan government effort to improve border management and boost legal trade.
