10 Higher Education Commission Scholars Complete degrees from Foreign Universities

Islamabad: Ten HEC scholars have completed their PhDs from the universities abroad and returned to Pakistan. These scholars proceeded to foreign universities under “Overseas Scholarship Scheme for PhD in Selected Fields – Phase-I”, the first-ever mega scholarship project of HEC.

So far, more than 400 scholars have completed their PhD under the project and returned to join the public and private sector universities and R and D organizations of Pakistan.

Dr. Salik Hussain successfully completed PhD degree in the domain of Cellular Toxicology/Nanotoxicology with highest distinction from Université Paris Diderot, Paris France. He was additionally honoured with label of “European Doctorate”. He was the first student from his university who fulfilled the requirements for the attribution of this honour.

Dr. Hussain published eight articles in the top ranked journals. During his scholarship period he presented his work in multiple international conferences in Europe and USA and won best presented work award in the 11th International Inhalation Symposium in Hanover, Germany. The scholar has joined the Department of Pathology, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore.

Dr. Afsheen Tabassum completed her PhD from Radboud University Medical Centre, Nijmegen, The Netherlands in Dentistry. She successfully defended her dissertation entitled “Surgical Approaches in Oral Implantology Enhancing Primary Stability and Peri-Implant Osteogenesis”. She has six international research articles in high impact factor peer reviewed international journals. She received an award in recognition of her research in European Association of Ossteo integeration (EAO) conference 2009 and was also nominated as a finalist for young investigator award at IADR meeting Barcelona 2010.

Dr. Waheed Samraiz Khan completed his PhD from Beijing Institute of Technology in Nanotechnology. The topic of his PhD thesis was “Synthesis, Characterization, Growth Mechanism and Properties of Zn and Cd based Nanomaterials with Novel Morphologies”.

The scholar published 22 research articles as principle or co-author in the accredited journals of most prestigious publishers like Elsevier, IOP, ACS, RSC, ASP etc with cumulative impact factor of about 50. He also won the title of “Excellent International Student at BIT for the year 2010.

Dr. Ahmed Ijaz Malik, a lecturer of Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad completed his PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London in International Relations. His thesis title was “Liberal Cosmopolitan and Realist Approaches to Gulf Wars 1991 and 2003: The Role of Discourse in Decision Making”. The scholar has rejoined School of Politics and International Relations, QAU, Islamabad.

Dr. Hammad Hassan of KPK completed his PhD with distinction from Institute of Immunology, Medical University of Vienna, Austria in Immunology. His thesis title was “Transcriptional control mechanisms of Cd8a gene expression in naïve and effector CD8+ T cells”. The scholar is motivated to add his contribution in the development of country in finding the cure for diseases, transfer of knowledge based skills to youth and integration of industry and research institutions. The scholar has joined Sarhad University, Peshawar.

Dr. Syed Waqar ul Qounain Jaffry, a lecturer of University of the Punjab, completed his PhD from the VU University, Amsterdam, Netherlands in computer sciences. His thesis title was “Design and Analysis of Human Trust Dynamics”. The scholar has three journals and 14 international conference papers publication to his credit. His research interests are computational modeling and simulation of different physical, biological, cognitive and social phenomena to provide an insight into these and to propose required interventions for the betterment of an individual and society. Dr. Jaffry has joined his parent organization.

Dr. Muhammad Jamil of Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) completed his PhD from Wageningen University, Netherlands in Plant Physiology. He earned his PhD degree titled “The relationship between strigolactones and Striga hermonthica infection in cereals”. Dr. Jamil’s research work is on underground signalling molecule to combat parasitic weeds in cereals and he published 11 research papers in scholarly journals. The scholar has rejoined PARC.

Dr. Muhammad Ali of University of Arid Agriculture Rawalpindi completed his PhD from Wageningen University, Netherlands in Food Technology; the Product Design and Quality Management. He completed his PhD project titled “Towards an approach to assess critical quality points (CQPs) in food production systems: A case study on French fries production”. He also presented his work in International conferences in Turkey and Denmark. The scholar has joined his parent organization as Assistant Professor.

Dr. Yaseen Zaidi of Hyderabad completed his PhD from Vienna University of Technology, Austria in Electrical Engineering. He earned his PhD degree titled “Refinement in Multi Models of Computation based Simulations”. Dr. Zaidi’s research interests are mixed mode/technology and heterogeneous modeling and model refinement. He is motivated to transfer the knowledge based skills to youth, integration of industry and research institutions. The scholar has six research publications and has joined back his parent organization.

Dr. Khawar Sajjad of Chiniot completed his PhD from the University of Versailles, France in parallel computing. His thesis title was “Porting Different Compilation Phases to Runtime”. During the PhD the scholar also helped his professor to build a dynamic compilation tool called HPBCG.
