Notice of Meeting: U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy

The U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy will meet in open session in Room 385 of the Russell Senate Office Building (2 Constitution Avenue NE) in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, December 8 from 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

The Commission Members will welcome a panel of experts to discuss Countering Violent Extremism through Public Diplomacy. Growing interest among governments to counter extremist violence raises questions regarding best practices, actor coordination, government-civil society relations, civil and human rights, and public policy, among others. In addition to addressing the material and political conditions contributing to violent extremist attitudes and behavior, communications have been identified as a key variable in any transition towards or away from extremism. Agencies throughout government have directed resources to understand the role of media, including social media, in facilitating acceptance of extremist violence.

This panel aims to highlight the various ways in which public diplomacy can contribute to combatting extremist attitudes and violence around the world by highlighting best practices and lessons learned. The following experts will discuss social media campaigns, as well as development and resilience-building efforts that contribute to combatting violent extremism in the long-term:

Abbas Barzegar, Principal Investigator, Civic Approaches to Combatting Extremist Violence Initiative

Sheldon Himelfarb, President and CEO of the PeaceTech Lab at the U.S. Institute of Peace

Alicia Kearns, Director, Global Influence and former Head of Counter-ISIS Communications for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (UK)

Peter Mandaville, Senior Advisor in the Secretary of State's Office of Religion & Global Affairs

Sarah Sayeed, Senior Advisor to the Mayor of New York City, Community Affairs Unit

Haroon Ullah, Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, U.S. Department of State
