Chief Minister, Governor, Speaker of Balcohistan Provincial Assembly admire International Union for Conservation of Nature’s work for conserving Ziarat’s Juniper Forest and Mangrove Forestation

Quetta, August 30, 2013 (PPI-OT): The IUCN Regional Director Asia, Ms. Aban Marker Kabraji met Balochistan government officials during her two-day visit to Quetta which included: Chief Minister of Balochistan; Governor of Balochistan, speaker of the Balochistan Assembly, Members of the Provincial Assembly and provincial secretaries and administrative heads of the government departments.

Ms. Kabraji updated the Chief Minister, Dr. Malik Baloch about the initiatives and interventions carried out by IUCN, particularly in the coastal areas of Balochistan. While appreciating achievements of IUCN particularly the plantation of mangroves along the coast of Balochistan, the Chief Minister assured his full support to IUCN in its efforts for sustainable development of the province.

During a meeting with the Governor of Balochistan, Mr. Mohammad Khan Achakzai contribution of IUCN for the conservation of Juniper Forests in Ziarat, environmental issues of Quetta city were thoroughly discussed.

Ms. Kabraji also briefed the Speaker of Assembly, Mr. Jan Jamali about the proposed of social forestry project to be implemented in Nasirabad district. While acknowledging his support to IUCN, the Speaker assured his support and allocation of financial resources from his funds for joint initiatives with IUCN on natural resource management. He also promised of garnering other elected members’ support to ensure a long-term development of the province.

A dinner was also hosted in honour of the newly elected Representatives of the Provincial Assembly. The elected representatives discussed the root causes of underdevelopment and other problems and issues being faced by the province. They also shared the practical approaches towards important issue like water scarcity, deforestation and air pollution and coastal zone management.

Ms. Kabraji stressed on the elected members to focus more on policy issues in managing the natural resources in a sustainable manner, while extending IUCN’s technical expertise and support in conceiving joint projects for prosperous future of the province.

Ms. Kabraji was accompanied by Mr. Mahmood Akhtar Cheema, IUCN Pakistan Country Representative and Mr. Faiz Kakar, Manager IUCN Balochistan Programme Office.
