Karachi, October 23, 2017 (PPI-OT):Mr. Gulzar Firoz, Chairman Standing Committee on Environment (CSR) of FPCCI welcomed Mr. Baqaullah Unar, Secretary/Director General, Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) Government of Sindh along with his team held at Federation House Karachi. The meeting was attended by Mr. Al Hajj Dhani Buksh Memon, Vice President FPCCI, representatives from SEPA, prominent businessmen of Karachi and members of the committee.
Mr. Gulzar Feroz in his remarks said that we are responsible for destroying our clean and healthy atmosphere, the industrial affluent and domestic waste is being released into the Arabian Sea in Karachi. He suggested that setting up the Combined Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) in all industrial zones is dire need of time as Pakistan is a signatory to WTO regulations that marks it mandatory to treat hazardous wastewater before its discharge into the sea. Complying with these conventions will enhance our export. He further suggested that a Committee should be formed of Town associations to keep check and balance on industries environmental safety measures are being taken by all the industries.
Mr. Baqaullah Unar, Secretary/Director General, Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) Government of Sindh and Chief Guest of the event in his remarks said that Environment is simply the water we drink, the Air we breath and the Soil (land) we live and walk on it If these three basic things are polluted then we are at the verge of disaster.
Polluted environment is creating lots of diseases and is big health hazard. He further added that Sindh Environmental Protection Act 2014, Sindh Act No. VIII of 2014 was passed in March 2014 but due to lack of proper understanding of the SEPA act 2014 failed to achieve desired result, An orientation session on this act was held in SEPA in September 2017.It is hoped things will get better in near future.
